Toronto, Ontario – October 15, 2008 - The future promise of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) rests upon availability of more funds to provide modern equipment and support services. To help SickKids the Czech and Slovak communities are coming together once more to host the ‘2009 Bohemian Ball with proceeds going to the SickKids Foundation.

We are most appreciative of the Czech and Slovak communities’ efforts as the funds raised will be directed towards highest priority needs at the Hospital and will help many children around the world” said Penny Kroll, Development Officer at the SickKids Foundation.

How did it begin? Early in 2007 a group of enthusiastic individuals met and brought to reality a special Fundraising Gala in support of SickKids Foundation. The 2008 Great Ball of Eights commemorated dates ending with number ‘8’ that played a significant role in the history of both Czech and Slovak nations: 1918, 1938, 1948 and 1968 to name just a few.

Miroslav Princ, the event’s Chair stated: “Thanks to all participants we’ve raised over $9,000 in our last event. Our donation allowed The Hospital for Sick Children to purchase three new IV Smart Pumps which bring them that much closer to their goal of replacing all smart pumps hospital wide. We hope the Bohemian Ball will become an annual event.”

The 2009 Bohemian Ball will help children from around the world at SickKids. Outstanding patient care, research and education have helped SickKids to emerge as one of the best centres for children’s health care in the world.

Already companies such as the Blue Jays, United Cleaning Services and OptiCom Marketing have come forward to lend their support. The Bohemian Ball is also grateful for the support it has received from The Key to Giving™ – the national corporate citizenship program of Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life – on behalf of Freedom 55 Financial, a division of London Life.

The 2009 Bohemian Ball, organized by the Canada Czech Republic Chamber of Commerce under the auspices of the Consul General of the Czech Republic, will take place on February 20, 2009 at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
